Monica Masterson, of Boulder, Colorado’s Piltdown Group, broke through the glass ceiling on February 22 – the first woman in the transactionals company’s 45-year history to do so.
During the process, however, she suffered some skull lacerations and a slight concussion, which rendered her unable to assume her new job as Vice President of Accommodations. Company officials attribute this to not taking necessary steps to ensure she broke through safely.
“We considered Ms. Masterson’s accomplishment to be a major milestone for Piltdown,” says Robert Ambers, the company’s VP of Resolutions. “Needless to say, we were shocked and disappointed that it turned out the way it did.”
Over the past 22 years, Masterson has excelled in every job she’s held, says Ambers, having been continually promoted to high-visibility positions – including to Chief Position Strategist in 2016, and Director of Advanced Remediation in 2019.
“To say we are are not happy is putting it mildly,” says Piltdown CEO Mark Rawlings. “We have always supported women wanting to break through the glass ceiling, and we provided Ms. Masterson with numerous opportunities to help her achieve that goal. But it was her responsibility to achieve it in a safe and responsible manner.”
Meanwhile, Masterson’s assistant, Paul Salant, has been appointed to her VP spot – though Rawlings has indicated there’s a good chance there will be another job for Masterson once she’s recovered.
“We can’t make any promises and it certainly isn’t going to be a VP position,” he says. “But I’m confident we can find her a good, steady job where she no longer poses a danger to herself or anyone else.”
