In response to criticism that its drone piano delivery has caused serious injuries to 111 bystanders when the drones dropped the piano, Milwaukee’s DropDOWN says it has taken steps to improve safety.

“We are obviously concerned about the well being of innocent people,“ says Ian Masterson, CEO of the fledgling start-up. “At the same time, we owe it to our investors to continuously seek ways to increase profitability.” When it was launched last August, DropDOWN received over $50 million in venture capital funding, plus a year’s supply of toothpaste.

Masterson says the company plans to increase the size of two of each drone’s seven propellers, and to double engine horsepower. These changes are expected to reduce accidents by up to 12 percent.

“Anytime a new system launches one can anticipate there will be growing pains,” says the CEO. While the company expected some injuries from falling pianos, he acknowledges that it didn’t anticipate there would be overf 100. “We figured 30-40, tops!” he says.

“But remember, there has been a cost to us, too,” he stresses. “A grand piano is worth over $50,000, and when we drop it that’s on us.” He believes DropDOWN has been subject to more criticism than is fair for a start-up.

“Everyone’s talking about the number of people who got hurt,” he says. “What I want to talk about are the 44 pianos we’ve delivered without incident.”

The post Drone Company Promises to Make Piano Delivery Safer first appeared on Cubicle F.

Over the past few years, American workplaces have come to rely on artificial intelligence to write documents, make phone calls, select salad dressings in the cafeteria, and perform approximately 22,000 other tasks more effectively than any human ever could.

Starting February 1, 2026, the act of relieving oneself will also be improved as PoopGPT becomes available for purchase.

“The US businessperson faces many challenges during the course of a workday,” says Shirley Addison, CEO of TruckPile, which developed the software. “By far the most inefficient and unpleasant is the act of going to the restroom.”

PoopGPT will change all that, she says – not just managing and scheduling, but actually taking over the physical act itself.

“What was once considered unpleasant and a nuisance, really, will become as routine and enjoyable as sending an email or updating a timeline,” says Addison.

The program was tested at 20 companies across the US for three. months last spring, and the results were largely even better than anticipated.

“There was some resistance to AI getting itself involved in such a personal process,” says Darren Hoostra, HR Director at Hansen/Weeks Chicago, one of the test sites. “But after just three or four days the staff was noticeably less stressed and perkier, and even walked with more of a spring in their steps.

There was also an upswing in productivity, since personnel were spending 67 percent less time on the process and could devote more attention to strategies and task forces.

Hansen/Weeks has also projected an annual savings of $104,000, based on having to purchase fewer tissue rolls, soap products, and deodorizers.

The post A.I.

There are currently 31 Michigan municipalities looking to fill the position of town drunk, up from 22 just a year ago.

“Many of them are moving onto other jobs,” says Jill Timrod of the Ballter Institute, which tracks employment patterns for town drunks, pipe twisters, and 32 other occuptions. “Mainly they’re going into government, though mechanical engineering is claiming quite a few.”

Ironically, the shortage is coming at a time when it’s easier than ever to qualify for the position.

“You no longer have to go staggering down Main Street in the middle of the night, singing ‘My Wild Irish Rose’ and getting locked up by the sherriff,” says Timrod. “Today you can qualify with a blood alcohol content of just 0.6.”

Also, she says it’s no longer necessary to be a disheveled older man, and that many younger women are accepting the positions to help pay for their college degrees.

Given the shortage, some cities have taken to sharing their town drunks, which means they have to split the peak hours of 11 PM to 3 AM between two cities. So unless both have a budget for transportation, it means the drunks have to remain sober in order to drive back and forth.

“That’s not an optimal situation,” says Timrod. “The position may be evolving, but the bottom line is that in order to be effective at the job, a town drunk needs to be at least somewhat drunk.”

The post More Michigan Municipalities Looking to Fill Town Drunk Positions first appeared on Cubicle F.

In 2018, the top five executives at major US companies were surrounded by an average of six people, everywhere they went – ranging from two or three at companies earning under $500 million a year to ten or more at those earning in the billions.

Today, the average is just four – and some have given up their entourages entirely.

“It’s not about the money,” says Nora Willson, an expert on corporate entourages at Cleveland’s Paxington Institute. “It’s about finding the people to be in them.”

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, the number of people applying for all positions at US companies has declined by 75 percent. “When you need a CFO or a suspension analyst,” says Willson, “it’s hard to justify filling an entourage position.”

Most entourages, she notes, are made up of people with no other responsibilities, available 24 hours a day to make the CEO appear important. Stakeholders expect them to be in place, and when they’re not the results can be disastrous.

“Last year I cut my entourage,” says the CEO of a multi-billion dollar polymer developer. “Within four days, our stock price had fallen by 17 percent.” Stockholders took it at as a sign that bad times were coming, she says, so she had no choice but to re-start .

“The stock’s on its way back up,” she says. “Thank God!”

But many companies don’t have such flexibility.

“I had five people for over 20 years but now I need pattern appraisers,” says a transformative CEO who disbanded his entourage a couple months ago. While he was able to fill the appraiser positions, he feels he isn’t getting as much respect.

“Last week a route planner parked in my designated spot,” he says. “I fear that’s just the beginning.”

The post Executive Entourages Have Shrunk by Average of 66 percent Since 2018 first appeared on Cubicle F.

Another nationally recognized retailer is setting up shop in Downtown Detroit. Jimmy Phipp’s Salt Shakers – which sold over 220 million of its popular designer dispensers in 2024 – will open a 430,000 square foot storefront on Washington Blvd on December 1.

“We look forward to taking Detroit’s salt shaking experience to a whole new level,” founder and namesake Jimmy Phipps, 29, said in a press release.

The dispensers start at $699 each, with high-end models going for as much as $15,000.

Phipps founded his first store in Brooklyn, NY in 2017 and was named one of Mopple magazine’s 25,000 Under 25 a year later. Today the chain boasts locations in 28 US cities, primarily targeting people in their 20s and 30s. Phipps shakers can be found everywhere from Cabreeze’s Artisan Mackerel Shop on San Francisco’s Wharf to the living room of rapper Big Bigger Biggest.

Laura Hollinger, a non-profit facilitator who lives in a Corktown Detroit loft, plans to be first in line the day the store opens. “I’ve saved three years for this,” she says, adding that she plans to buy one shaker in 2026, and another – finances permitting – in 2027.

Two Detroit restaurants have also contracted to go exclusively Phipps: Madelyn’s in Midtown, which specializes in mint-braised quasi-meats and AllBroth, scheduled to open in June in what’s being called an “authentic neighborhood” on Detroit’s west side.

Being an effective micro-manager is an ongoing challenge. Continually fine-tuning one’s skills is essential in order to keep up with the six million US managers who advance to micro-management every year.

From the US Association of Micro-Management, here are six tips for keeping skills sharp:

The micro-managing standard of asking employees for a project update every 97 minutes is no longer sufficient. Never allow more than 88 minutes to pass between requests, and work toward 85. Likewise, if you are only explaining things six times you should immediately increase this to seven, with the ultimate goal of ten.

Before employees go to lunch, spend five minutes with them to review potential menu options. While acknowledging that you understand they may have their own food preferences, make it clear that your preference is for them to consume healthy fare like grains and lettuce.

Eliminate phrases like “What do you think?” and “Give me your feedback!” from your vocabulary. While well intended, they take up time you could be using to provide more detailed instructions.

If staffers use the expression “to sum things up,” let them know you prefer, “at the end of the day.” Or vice versa.

Once a month, take the time to discretely follow employees as they run personal errands – shopping, trips to dry cleaners, etc. Afterward, schedule a meeting to suggest procedures that might improve their efficiency.

Make sure everyone is focused on minute details, and that they never look at the big picture. To ensure this, remove all big pictures from the workplace.

The post Becoming a More Effective Micro-Manager first appeared on Cubicle F.

NOW!!! (with three exclamation points) – is a new aerosol spray that has proven effective in reducing Decision Freeze – a condition where a person needs to make a quick decision but, fearing the wrong one will result in disaster, freezes up instead.

Developed by the Lunderplex — the researchers responsible for coining the term “pre-conceptual” — NOW!!! forces the issue by instantly unclogging the “perignogle” particles in the cerebral cortex, which are responsible for making decisions (and also for memorizing lyrics to TV sitcom themes).

One quick spritz in either nostril is usually enough in normal situations, like when someone gets wide-eyed and starts stammering. Two or three may be required when the freeze is so severe they aren’t able to move, like the Tin Man.

“I truly believe that NOW!!! saved my hide,” says Emma Asterson, a concepts analyst based in Cleveland. Last month she froze up three times within a week week – including once when asked whether a meeting should be held at 1:15 or 1:30 PM. As a result, she says, three different vice presidents turned around and ran when they encountered her in the hallway.

“Two weeks ago I was asked whether we should use formatted or pre-formatted variances,” she says. “One quick spritz was all it took.” She chose pre-formatted, and now when she sees the vice presidents they no longer run. “Some day soon,”says Asterson, “I can see them actually looking at me.”

On the market just two months, it’s estimated to NOW!!! has achieved a 67 percent success rate, though there have been some side effects – such as the case of a Connecticut stockbroker who was trying to determine whether to buy AT&T, but somehow ended up painting an extra stripe down a mile-long stretch of I-95.

The post Aerosol Nose Spray Unclogs Brain, Speeds Up Decision Making Process first appeared on Cubicle F.

Chicago home goods maker Peers & Webb has achieved the goal that has eluded businesses for over a century: A product package that is absolutely impossible to open.

On September 15, the American Packaging Institute certified the hard plastic cover on P & W’s Aunt Annie’s Twin Flashlights as Guaranteed Un-Openable – based on the fact that nobody has been able to get at the flashlights since they were introduced in June of 2023.

Companies across the globe have spent billions trying to reach this two-year milestone, the point at which a package is certified un-openable. They’ve utilized increasingly thicker layers of plastic, solid zinc fasteners, Alabama-based gluing compounds, and more. The average American now spends 42.3 days per year trying to open cookies, microwave ovens, and other products.

“More than once we thought we’d make the two years,” says P & W’s CEO Mel Cranston. “But then some guy in Quincy, Illinois would figure out how to open the pickle forks or ice tongs.”

The best attempt until now was by the Niesenfraus Group of Dusseldorf, Germany, whose package for Whitfield Tea remained un-openable for 23 months and 27 days in 1991. It was just about to be certified when a thirsty resident of Dayton, Ohio managed to pry it open using a four-foot hatchet, beeswax and silicon-based explosives.

Meanwhile, sales for the twin flashlights have risen 35 percent each of the past two years – apparently unaffected by the fact that nobody has yet been able to use one.

The post Finally!
The first Detroit restaurant built entirely of Pampers boxes is set to open in Midtown on November 1.

“The pandemic situation delayed us for a few years but now we’re ready ,” says owner/chef Margo Hollings. “And we think Detroit is ready, too.” While the city currently boasts six other restaurants built of disposable diaper boxes – four from Huggies and two from Luvs – Blovine’s is the first made of Pampers.

Hollings, who previously ran Kalmer’s – the Ferndale diner known for serving 48 varieties of pretzels, each named after a governor of Michigan – came up with the idea for Rashless after a meal at one of the Huggies eateries.

“I was served by a nice waitress name Destiny and the cucumber parfait was delicious,” she says. “But the experience just didn’t seem authentic.”

Hollings secured funding in late 2024, mainly from friends, family, and a man named George R. Tarnover. She then spent the next year rounding up the boxes. She needed 280,000 to build the 2400 square foot restaurant, which will include a state of the art kitchen featuring the area’s 12th walnut braiser.

“Getting the money was easy compared to the boxes,” she says. “Let’s just say I went to places I never thought I’d go.” She won’t comment on a February arrest behind a west side marijuana dispensary, other than to say that charges were eventually dropped.

As of this week, the exterior walls are in place. Work on the inside is on schedule, and Hollings has been busy categorizing and prioritizing grapefruit – which, offered in 17 different formats, will be one of Rashless’s staple dishes.
