Insurer Will Begin Covering Slapped Wrists and Nine Other Job Performance Injuries

Mutuality of Modesto, the USA’s 2,914th largest corporate health care provider, announced this week that it is expanding its coverage to include certain workplace injuries that have become increasingly common.

“Over the past 15 years we’ve seen a rise in specific incidents related to the performance of ones’ job,” says Wilma Fuller, the company’s VP of Responsibility. “While other insurers have hesitated to provide coverage, we can no longer ignore the ever-increasing need.”

The company decided to expand the coverage last year, when a policyholder was hospitalized with severe bruising on her wrists from having them slapped repeatedly over a period of years.

“It had gotten to the point where she could barely type and needed treatment,” says Fuller. “How could we refuse coverage?”

Effective in September, Mutuality will also cover:

  • Minor burns resulting from having one’s feet held to the fire
  • Toes swollen subsequent to getting stepped on
  • Fingers strained from continuous pointing
  • Rib cage injuries caused by taking the bull by the horns
  • Sprained lower back muscles from constantly raising the bar
  • Scrapes or contusions suffered after being thrown under the bus
  • Wounds inflicted when getting stabbed in the back
  • Replacement of lower limbs due to being cut off at the knees
  • Replacement of the head after the boss has taken it off, handed it to you on a plate, or both

According to Fuller, Mutuality is also studying the feasibility of covering even minor injuries – such as paper cuts resulting from pushing the envelope – starting in 2022.
