Another nationally recognized retailer is setting up shop in Downtown Detroit. Jimmy Phipp’s Salt Shakers – which sold over 220 million of its popular designer dispensers in 2022 – will open a 430,000 square foot storefront on Washington Blvd.  August 1 is the targeted launch date.

“We look forward to taking Detroit’s salt shaking experience to a whole new level,” founder and namesake Jimmy Phipps, 29, said in a press release.

The dispensers start at $699 each, with high-end models going for as much as $45,000.

Phipps founded his first store in Brooklyn, NY in 2017 and was named one of Mopple magazine’s 25,000 Under 25 a year later. Today the chain boasts locations in 28 US cities, primarily targeting people in their 20s and 30s.  Phipps shakers can be found everywhere from Cabreeze’s Artisan Mackerel Shop on San Francisco’s Wharf to the living room of rapper Big Bigger Biggest.

Laura Hollinger, a non-profit facilitator who lives in a Corktown loft, plans to be first in line the day the store opens. “I’ve saved three years for this,” she says, adding that she plans to buy one shaker in 2023, and another – finances permitting – in 2024.

As of December 1, two new Detroit restaurants have also contracted to go exclusively Phipps: Madelyn’s in Midtown, which specializes in mint-braised meats garnished in pantaloon sauce, and AllBroth, scheduled to open in June in what’s being called an “authentic neighborhood” on Detroit’s west side.
